Digitised @ SLQ – Paul’s dairy factory photo collection

By JOL Admin | 25 September 2018

Nestled alongside the Brisbane River on Montague Rd, South Brisbane and in close proximity to the William Jolly Bridge is the Pauls Dairy factory which has been part of the landscape on Kurilpa Point for sixty-five years.

The history of the business is well documented, including the establishment of the powdered milk processing plant which was developed for people who could not access a fresh milk supply locally, or at times when fresh milk was in short supply.

It is not often we can take a peek inside a working factory but in 2017 State Library purchased a series of born-digital images by freelance documentary photographer Dean Saffron. The 31361 Dean Saffron Paul’s milk factory photographs are available in One Search.

They showcase parts of the processing plant inside and out and offer the viewer a glimpse of the people going about their work at the time.

The company has had various names, including Queensland United Foods Ltd, Pauls Ice Cream & Milk Ltd and Pauls Limited. In 1998, Pauls Limited was purchased by the Italian company Parmalat, and officially changed its name to Parmalat Australia Ltd in 2003.

Queensland United Foods (QUF) was established in 1960. Did you know QUF was inducted into the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame in 2013, in recognition of its success as a listed Queensland public company and its outstanding contribution to the national dairy industry through innovations in production technology, products and marketing? Watch the digital story revealing a glimpse of the business, its development and connection to Queensland's agriculture sector.

State Library encourages you to view the 40 digital photographs. They are 'in copyright' but you are free to use them for personal research and study. For any other use send us your enquiry.
