Plantation Voices: Contemporary conversations with Australian South Sea Islanders exhibition opened with a community event on Saturday 16 February 2019.  Many community members travelled from near and far to be a part of the day and to see the exhibition.  Approximately 250 people attended the event.  It was great to see so many families represented in the audience.

2019 marks the 25th anniversary of the national recognition of Australian South Sea Islanders as a distinct cultural group.  It is important the community continues to come together to acknowledge South Sea Islander ancestors and pay homage to their strength, hard work and resilience.  It is as equally important to encourage and empower everyone to continue to share your stories  to help to keep the Australian South Sea Islander story alive.  It was great to see so many people talking in the exhibition and exploring the material that was out in the white gloves room.  Thank you so much to you all for continuing to support and create awareness about Australian South Sea Islander history, heritage and culture.  You can see more great images from this day go to the State Library of Queensland website.
