Clyde McGill’s Book: A remnant of the journey, he said, to the space between us/ to Berlin.
By Christene Drewe | 31 March 2016
Artist’s book by Clyde McGill. Plus DVD of accompanying performance. Self-published in Perth, WA 2006.
A severe but elegant artist’s book, A4 size on its side – embossed with the title on black cloth cover, housed in a matching black sleeve.
There is also a DVD of the performance that ‘matches’ the book and completes the work.
Don’t miss an opportunity to play this, preferably before experiencing the book.
Poem – vocal- repetition over several verses – rhythmic movement into, and out of light and dark, whilst the artist describes meetings and conversations that happen to him along his – European – way.
The book is another visualisation of the performance. The work has been through three processes – writing- performing – voice – drawing – photo, in a mesmerising cycle.
Text plus atmospheric dark photographs of Berlin places; scratchy etchings look like tracks through snowy ground. There is reference to imprisonment – marking off the days on a wall.
