Choose Queensland’s fossil emblem

Lots of children love dinosaurs and now you and your family can play a part in choosing Queensland’s new state fossil emblem! This is an exciting opportunity for Queenslanders of all ages to help choose the 10th official State emblem which will become part of Queensland’s iconic and historic legacy.

In prehistoric times, Outback Queensland was alive with marine animals that swam in our ancient inland seas, and creatures that roamed our vast landscapes. With so many fossils uncovered in our ancient past, The Queensland Government needs your help to choose the new State fossil emblem!  

There are 12 great candidates to pick from including marine animals, dinosaurs, a crocodile, an early platypus, a giant aquatic amphibian and a flower that lived millions of years ago. 

Queensland has some of the most exciting fossil museums, dinosaur trails and discovery centres in the world - so it’s no wonder there are 12 exciting fossils to choose from.  

Visit the website to learn more about the 12 dinosaurs including the Richmond polycotylid, the Australotitan cooperensis, the Diamantinasaurus matildae, and the Kronosaurus queenslandicus! Take your time to look through drawings and descriptions to learn where they roamed or swam and how big they were.

Get your friends and family involved 

Why not encourage your friends and family to nominate too? The more nominations that come in for your preferred fossil could result in your favourite prehistoric superstar being awarded this evergreen accolade! 

The public consultation process is now open on the fossil website. Once nominations close in July and the new State fossil emblem has been announced, it will become Queensland’s newest emblem, joining the nine established State emblems.
