Cardboard Castles now on in The Corner at State Library of Queensland

By Karen Hind | 12 December 2018

There’s play, there’s fun, there’s plenty to do, themed activities and a safe environment. Families, children under 8 and their carers are invited to The Corner, the play based learning environment at State Library, to experience all the fun of the new theme Cardboard Castles.

Cardboard Castles provides the opportunity for young people to come on a design and construction adventure where form and function meet fancy and fun. The theme is based on the current State Library exhibition Home: a suburban obsession. The installation, props and resources set the stage for children’s learning, interaction, creative output and play.

We install a different Corner setting three times each year to create a new, stimulating and thought–provoking play space for children. Each change evokes new feelings and experiences for young people to learn different words and concepts amplified by the structures and props in the theme.

Cardboard Castles is built on the shape, space, line, texture and form repeated throughout the Home exhibition’s bricks, louvres, and picket fence shapes. This Corner theme is imagined by Home exhibition artist Jennifer Marchant.

Cardboard Castles celebrates design thinking for encouraging a growth mindset and important problem solving, analytical and spatial thinking skills.

The Cardboard Castles book list topics are art, builders, colours, design, little inventors, shapes and texture. There are titles to suit ages from birth to eight including Dog Loves Drawing by Louise Yates; Brick Who Found Herself in Architecture by Joshua David Stein; Look by Fiona Woodcock and That’s Not My Bee by Fiona Watt. Read some books on your visits to The Corner or look for them at your local public library or bookstore. There’s a title to suit your own budding architect or young designer.

Children in The Corner can join a facilitated arts activity with one of our arts workers on site daily from 10am-12noon. The Corner is open every day from 10am – 3pm. Why not bring your family and experience The Corner for yourself? Cardboard Castles is in the Corner from now until March 2019. For information contact ypf@slq.qld.gov.au
