Bright Bold Boundless: Designing the Queen's Baton

Designed, engineered and manufactured by Brisbane-based Designworks, the GC2018 Queen’s Baton draws inspiration from the boundless energy of the people, place and spirit of the Gold Coast. In form and inspiration the GC2018 Queen’s Baton is a symbol of the past, present and future.

Bright Bold Boundless takes you into the heart of design thinking in practice and the history of this longstanding Commonwealth Games tradition. View early sketches, video diaries and interviews to unearth the inspiration behind the Baton’s unique design and technological capabilities. Learn about the creative use of local materials and plastics reclaimed from Gold Coast waterways that form part of the Baton’s structure. Examine exclusive prototypes of the GC 2018 Queen’s Baton, a range of Games ephemera and images as well as batons from past Commonwealth Games.

Bright Bold Boundless: Designing the Queen’s Baton offers visitors an opportunity to see up close rarely-seen Commonwealth Games memorabilia and provides a behind-the-scenes look at contemporary design in practice.

As part of the Bright Bold Boundless display, SLQ will host Untold stories of the GC2018 Queen’s Baton. Hear from Designworks as they take us on a behind-the-scenes journey of designing the Baton.

Also, join a curator-led tour of the Bright Bold Boundless  in the Asia Pacific Design Library (APDL).
