Last week we published an article by Mark Clayton, about the hospital ship S. S. Maheno, and the journey of seven children from the North Otago (New Zealand) town of Maheno to Fraser Island, bringing with them a large ship’s bell. Mark has provided some additional information about their visit.
At a formal gathering on Monday 20th April, held at Queensland Maritime Museum, the visiting students and teachers from Maheno were presented with a replica of the ship’s bell, one of a handful faithfully reproduced by Olds Engineering of Maryborough.
The original, seen on the left of the image above, had developed a number of cracks which prevent its continued use. Olds Engineering took advantage of the original bell’s brief presence here to also cast replicas for the Queensland Maritime Museum, and the Maryborough Military & Colonial Museum.
