The arrival of electricity in the early 20th century, social networks of crime and corruption, and the perspectives of First Nations photographers are just some of the research projects honoured in this year's Queensland Memory Awards.
At a special State Library event on Friday 18 June and hosted by ABC Broadcast Craig Zonca, the successful recipients of the Queensland Memory Awards were congratulated by Minister for Communities and Housing, Minister for Digital Economy and Minister for the Arts the Honourable Leeanne Enoch.
Dr Henry Reese was awarded the John Oxley Library Fellowship ($20,000 plus 12-month residency) for his project Electrifying Queensland: Modern Machines in the Sunshine State. Dr Reese aims to develop his research into a podcast.
Associate Professor Mark Lauchs was awarded the John Oxley Library Honorary Fellowship (12-month residency) for his project Social Networks of Crime and Corruption: the First and Second Jokes. Associate Professor Lauchs will be using the Phil Dickie collection in his research.
Tracey Olivieri, founder of the Friends of South Brisbane Cemetery and Chris Dawson secretary, of the Friends of South Brisbane Cemetery were awarded the John Oxley Library Award in recognition of their contribution over many years to the Friends of the South Brisbane Cemetery group.
The Montville History Group was awarded the John Oxley Library Community History Award ($5,000) for the publication of their Montville Stories Series. This project is ongoing, and the Montville History Group aim to publish more books as part of the series.
Ms Jo-Anne Driessens was awarded the Mittelheuser Scholar-in-Residence ($15,000 plus 12-month residency) for her project - Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander lens perspectives. Ms Driessens will work with Queensland’s First Nations photographers as well as the wider GLAM sector to help preserve and maintain their photographic collections.
Ms Rachel West-Captain was awarded the Monica Clare Research Fellowship ($15,000 plus 12-month residency) for her project – A Murruwarri Family of South West Qld and North West NSW - The 'West & Captain' Family. Ms West Captain will examine the history of communities and families living on the South West border.
Dr Robin Trotter was awarded the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame Fellowship ($15,000 plus 12-month residency) for her project Sir Arthur Petfield: from tinplate to porcelain (History of the Queensland Can Company). As a former employee of Queensland Can Company, Dr Trotter will use Sir Arthur Petfield’s collection as a basis for her research.
