2010 John Oxley Library Award and Fellowship

Congratulations to the 2010 John Oxley Library Award winner, Professor Kay Saunders whose many publications on aspects of Queensland history, especially in the areas of race and gender relations, take pride of place in the John Oxley Library Reading Room.

As Professor Saunders remarked in her acceptance speech the book she wrote with Professor Raymond Evans Exclusion, exploitation and extermination: race relations in colonial Queensland remains one of the hardest hitting books on the subject to this day.

Professor Saunders' Between the Covers: revealing the State Library of Queensland's collections, written in collaboration with Oxley librarian Dianne Byrne, is a wonderful guide to the rich holdings of the John Oxley Library in particular and it is more than fitting that she has been honoured in 2010 with the John Oxley Library Award.

Our John Oxley Library Fellow for 2010 is historian, author, and University of Queensland librarian Dr Jeff Rickertt. Dr Rickertt has been awarded the Fellowship to research and write a biography of journalist and socialist Ernest Lane to be titled Ernie Lane, Australian Labour's Resolute Rebel.

We very much look forward to working together with Dr Rickertt as he takes up residence in the Fellowship Study.

At the same time as we welcome our new Fellow we farewell Dr Judith Mackay and Ms Susan Addison who have used the John Oxley Library Fellowship to further their resarch into Queensland's culinary traditions that began with their book A Good Plain Cook: an edible history of Queensland. It has been enriching and an absolute pleasure to work with such dedicated and accomplished historians/writers. Judith and Susan will speak at the next Out of the Port lunchtime lecture about their research on cooks and books.

As State Librarian, Lea-Giles Peters said at the 2010 State Library of Queensland Awards ceremony, "The research conducted by previous John Oxley Fellows has made a significant contribution to understanding Queensland's collective past, as Dr Rickertt's research will in 2010 and 2011. Each year the JOL Fellow brings to light forgotten narratives of the people, places and communities of Queensland and allows us to make new and varied connections to fragments of history wich otherwise may be lost."

Special congratulations also to Jeff Moore from the North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum recipient of the $5000 John Oxley Library Community History Award and Professor Christine Bruce winner of the $5000 Library Board of Queensland Award.
