Labor Manifesto returns ‘home’

The Manifesto of the Australian Labour Party (1892) has returned home after being present under the new Tree of Knowledge Memorial at Premier Bligh’s 19th community cabinet in Barcaldine.

Ms Bligh said it was a historic moment with the manifesto to return to the exact point where it was first read aloud over a century ago.

“UNESCO recently named the The Manifesto of the Australian Labour Party (1892) a document of international significance,” she said.

Listen to Amy Van Allen, Outreach Manager in Community and Constituent Services at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) as she talks about how NMAI challenges traditional museum ideologies by being a Native place, both physically and spiritually, with an emphasis on community curators in exhibitions and the use of traditional care methods for collections as advised by tribal representatives.

Exhibition: Behind the lines 2008

Behind the lines: the best cartoons of 2008 offer a rare insight into the humorous world of political cartoonists. Exhibition visitors will be invited to choose their favourite cartoon for the People's Choice Award. The exhibition will be displayed in the Phillip Bacon Gallery from 21 November.

Historical Queensland films digitised

A selection of digitised films from the John Oxley Library collection are now available via YouTube. The films include intimate family celebrations as well as events in the history of Queensland such as street celebrations following the declaration of peace on Victory in the Pacific Day 1945 and Queen Elizabeth’s visit to Brisbane in 1954.

First aerial photos of Brisbane - new digitised collection item

Published in 1919, Brisbane from the air : illustrated shows the first photographs taken of Brisbane from an aeroplane. The 40 minute flight was made on behalf of the Courier and Queenslander newspapers. The ideal weather conditions enabled the photographer to obtain excellent negatives from nearly 2,000 feet.
