Currie Street, Nambour
Fires have played a prominent part in the history of Currie Street, this one in 1924 [John Oxley Library neg. 1465]

The panorama shows Currie Street, the main business and shopping precinct for the town of Nambour in approximately 1932. The image was taken by CA Blakey of Buderim. The close up, dated about 1920, depicts an earlier Currie Street in which there are only horses, bicycles, and bullock wagons for transportation.

Originally known as Gympie Road, Currie Street was officially named in 1896 in honour of Daniel Currie, an American who selected an area of 640 acres in the district in 1882. He established an abundant orchard and built a residence on what is now Magnolia Street. His descendants have continued to play an important role in the development of Nambour.

Major fires have been a constant problem for the owners of property in Currie Street. In 1914 fire raised the Commercial Hotel; in 1924 a large number of buildings in Currie Street were destroyed and in 1946 Whalley's store and adjoining premises were burnt down.
