Database: search for Queenslanders on the Veldt
When soldiers from Queensland joined British forces for the South African War, The Queenslander newspaper was there to record their involvement. From 1899 to 1902, reports and photographs appeared in the weekly newspaper, including many hundreds of portraits of the soldiers.
Search our database for the names of Boer War soldiers whose portraits appeared in 1899-1902 issues of The Queenslander newspaper.
Search results are arranged alphabetically by the soldier's surname. Each soldier's entry includes information such as:
- rank
- details of military service
- personal contacts as they were given in the paper
- date and page of the issue in which the photograph will be found.
The Queenslander is held on microfilm at the State Library of Queensland. Photocopies are available at a cost of 10 cents per A4 copy or 20 cents per A3 copy.
The John Oxley Library can also provide black-and-white photographic copies of the pictures which appeared in the paper. To order use our photographic request form, completing these details:
- the date of the issue of the paper
- the page on which the photograph appeared
- the entry number, if there is one
- the name of the soldier.
