See Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as they see themselves through the camera lens. Opposed to being documented by outsiders; these photographs portray a sense of innate spirit and truth.

Moonboy Indigenous Connections  Sidney Nolan's Rite of Spring Photographs by Axel Poignant

This exhibition is about the connections between the work of a photographer (Axel Poignant), artist (Sidney Nolan), choreographer (Kenneth MacMillan) and composer (Igor Stravinsky) and the Aboriginal peoples from north-eastern Arnhem Land. The photographs on display show how the ceremonial dances of the Kunibidgi, Burrara and Nakkara peoples, inspired a reinterpretation of a controversial ballet The Rite of Spring.

Infozone New Media Residency and Exhibition Project

Careful messenger Careful Messenger

New media artists explore the State Library and investigate new ways of interpreting and responding to its collections and spaces in the Infozone Residency and Exhibition Project.

Tim Plaisted’s Careful Messenger is a video projection from a game engine that portrays the role of the institution serving library visitors. Careful Messenger is the name of Tim’s grandfather’s WWI horse and the digital library search engine. It delivers information for any query however it can’t say if you’re asking the right questions..

Talbot Family Treasures Wall

Positioned at the heart of the Heritage Collection suite of galleries and reading rooms on level 4, the 25 metre glass-walled exhibition space provides an up close view of rare items from the Collections.

Just gorgeous sheet music Just gorgeous sheet music

This exhibition presents some of the State Library’s finest examples of beautifully illustrated sheet music from 18th century Handel sonatas to 20th century jazz tunes. Sheet music can tell us a great deal, not only about the history of music publishing and cover design, but also about the musical tastes and social habits of those who purchased and enjoyed it. ‘Just gorgeous’ is how you will describe these treasures from the Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian periods. Careing for the collection Caring for the collections

Ever wondered how the State Library cares for its old books, newspapers and photographs? Want to know how to look after your own precious heirlooms? Then come and look at the display Caring for the Collections.

Every cultural institution has a responsibility to safeguard the collections with which it is entrusted. At the State Library, this important task is undertaken by the Collection Preservation Unit. This display wall contains windows into the staff work areas so that you can look 'behind the scenes' to see staff at work.
