Knowledge Quest: A study and research skills workshop

Studying? Get hot tips on where to begin, how to better organise yourself and how to ultimately get the marks you want. This half day session, especially designed for students, will also give you the low-down on using State Library resources and searching the catalogue and databases.

The course includes:

Introduction to Web design

Creating a website from scratch may seem a daunting task, but it need not be difficult or expensive. A good place to start is with CoffeeCup HTML Editor 2008, a flexible, free, downloadable web design package that is simple enough for novices but packed with enough features to make it appealing to more advanced users. In this course you will design a basic website and be introduced to all the tools and design tips you need to create a website of your own.

Blogging and Twitter for beginnners

Learn how to design and maintain your own blog with user-friendly editing tools. Blogs are personally managed websites that allow you to share your thoughts, activities and opinions. Connect with friends, family or the entire world through regular diary-style entries and commentary. Twitter is micro blogging and ‘everyone’ is using it. Staff will share with you why it’s the latest trend in blogging.

Google It

There’s more to Google than you imagine. Come along and learn how to use Google to search, communicate and share. Staff will demonstrate searching strategies, show you how to create a personalised Google home page, create documents without purchasing software and much more.

Create your own MySpace account

MySpace is a popular social networking site that connects friends and family world-wide. Learn how to create your own account, share photos, links and videos, create blogs and manage privacy issues. Bring along some of your own photos on a USB to upload to your newly created account. Ticket price includes a comprehensive manual. For ages 14 and over.

Cut your phone bills with Skype

We all love something for nothing.  Skype lets you make cheap local, national and international calls to phones and mobiles via the internet.  This session will show you the equipment required, how to download the software, how to get yourself fully operational and start saving money on calls.

Discovering Queensland 

After the sell out success of the first two sessions, Professor Raymond Evans leads further Queensland history courses for the public. His fascinating book, A History of Queensland, will be the focal text of the course and will inform the course outline. State Library’s Queensland Authors Librarian, Dr Leanne Day, will assist Raymond by acting as facilitator and together they will spend time during each session to reveal some of the State Library’s treasures that link into the themes of the chapters being discussed. Participants are asked to read the relevant chapters of Raymond’s book prior to their examination across the six weeks of the course.

Conservation Clinic

Do you have a rare book, artwork on paper, manuscript, document, map, old photograph, film or object that you want to know how to care for correctly at home?  Each month our professional conservation staff are available for one-on-one consultations to look at your personal treasures and offer advice on how to maximise their longevity.  Individual consultations are for a maximum of 20 minutes.  Bring a notebook to record the valuable advice your receive.

The immigrants journey to Australia

Books, logs, letter, diaries, newspapers, government reports and images, held by the Queensland State Archives and the State Library of Queensland, can assist you to research the immigrant journey to Australia in the 19th and 20th Century. State Library Reference Services and Heritage Collection staff, along with an Archivist from the State Archives will explain how to access these resources. This session includes morning tea and the opportunity to network with other researchers and staff from both the State Library and State Archives.
