Our Dreaming: animating country is an interactive program of exhibitions and events for all ages. Open daily until 9 June throughout SLQ, explore large scale projections, three-dimensional art installations, augmented reality, hands on activities, and a wide range of animated films.

Begin your journey in kuril dhagun (level 1) and enjoy an exhibition of stories by the next generation of Indigenous storytellers. Head upstairs to SLQ Gallery (level 2) where you can watch touching and timeless Australian animations, stories suitable for all the family with spaces to tell your own.

Then it’s all hands on level 4! Enter the animation studio to experiment with apps and programs to bring your stories to life on screen with free animation workshops for all ages

Watch a selection of films from The Dreaming series and get lost in your own private screening of Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, retold through animation.

Enjoy a selection of films created through digital storytelling projects from Queensland and beyond, and discover each story’s unique style of animation.

Activity table | Animation studio (Philip Bacon Heritage Gallery), level 4  | Ages 3+

Feeling crafty? Head to the Animation studio’s activity table! Grab a pen and paper and make your very own thaumatrope or use the Artsee Studio device to paint a digital masterpiece with your fingertips.

Children’s trail | throughout SLQ | Ages 3+

Discover the library along the children’s Kurilpa trail! Starting in the Infozone, follow the trees as they lead you through Our Dreaming: animating country, taking you through activities along the way.

Augmented reality activity | SLQ Gallery, level 2 | Ages 3+ (with adult assistance)

Take the Aurasma device and unlock stories hidden within the exhibition that other SLQ visitors have left behind for you to discover! Then, decorate a flower or butterfly, record your own story and add it to the exhibition to share your story with other visitors. (Volunteers are onsite to assist.)

Big screen animations | SLQ Gallery, level 2 | All ages 

Sit back and enjoy a selection of animations from The Dreaming series as they are played on the big screen.

Big screen animations | kuril dhagun, level 1 | All ages

Get cosy in the bean bags and take in a selection of local, national and international indigenous animations as they are played on big screens.

This hands-on form of animation will see you set the scene, build your characters, then put them into action using an iPad animation app. Let your imagination run wild!

‘Pencil’ animation software | Animation studio (Philip Bacon Heritage Gallery), level 4 | Ages 12+

Take your animation skills to the next level and bring your drawings to life with Pencil animation software. 

Light box drawing | SLQ Gallery, level 2 | Ages 8+

Get back-to-basics with animation, put pencil to paper and trace images from beautiful light boxes.

Interactive iPad stations | kuril dhagun, level 1 | Ages 3+

Play your way through language apps and interactive storybooks on the iPad stations in kuril dhagun.

Reading nook | kuril dhagun, level 1 | Ages 3+

Learn some new words with the Yugambeh Aboriginal language books and speaking pens, or create a story on the felt storyboard. Get cosy in kuril dhagun’s reading corner and discover a range of books and games inspired by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. 

Reading corner | Animation studio (Philip Bacon Heritage Gallery), level 4| Ages 3+

Tuck yourself away in the colourful reading corner to discover a selection of Australian children’s books, and books on storytelling and animation.

Educators

Are you an educator looking for interesting learning experiences for your students? Our Dreaming aligns with the Australian Curriculum in English, History, and Geography, with a focus on the cross-curricular priority of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures. Our Dreaming: animating stories competition

Entries are now open to children aged 5–13 years old for the Our Dreaming: animating stories competition. Produce a two minute digital story (film, animation, slideshow) that can only be told in your local community. The story needs to respond to the question, “What connects me to my place?”This is your chance to win great prizes, including an iPad (group prize) or iPad mini (individual prize).
