Serving Country Forum

Serving Country Forum

This event is now in the past.

Join us at the Serving Country Forum to hear thought-provoking conversations unfold on the untold stories of the First World War. When war was declared in 1914, many Indigenous men were the first to try to enlist although it wasn’t until April 1917 that Indigenous enlistment was permitted. These young men fought valiantly for their country, they stood side by side with their fellow Australians in the hope of bringing equality to their communities. Until recently these stories and this history was virtually unknown.

This is a unique opportunity for researchers, historians, family and community members to bring these stories back to life — and shine light upon the untold stories of the home front and highlight 100 years of Indigenous service. The forum will feature speakers and researchers from the Black Diggers production, a joint Queensland Theatre Company and Sydney Theatre Company Production, as well as speakers from the Australian War Memorial, Cherbourg Historical Precinct and the Yugambeh Museum.

The forum will be live streamed online as part of Q ANZAC 100: Memories for a New Generation, a five-year legacy project led by State Library and proudly supported by the Queensland Government.
