The 2018 UQ Architecture lecture series continues with Michael Banney, director of m3architecture, exploring some of this Brisbane-based firm's work.

Like his projects, Michael’s approach to practice draws from unexpected sources. In Circumstantial Aspects of Arson 1955, William H Hopper provides tips for young prosecutors:

“We must always look for both the usual and the unusual.  And as we pick up the individual strands of circumstances, and weave them into our rope of evidence, we should check each strand for its strength.  We want to weave a pattern around the defendant, such that they will have the utter feeling of hopelessness.  It is not easy to fashion a circumstantial case of arson. Circumstances are part and parcel of every facet of life, including an arson investigation, and we should strive to know, understand and utilize the circumstances which will furnish evidence of probative value.”

For Michael, this is equally a handbook for architectural practice — building up cases for projects based on anecdotal evidence — anecdotes that corroborate one another and reveal a conviction for a project around which architecture can be formed. Collectively, the projects of m3architecture, such as The Edge at State Library of Queensland, confirm its practice conviction based on managed multiplicity, an approach that has now produced almost two decades of interesting work.

The annual UQ Architecture lecture series brings together forward-thinking architects and provocateurs who are engaged in the generation of new knowledge, ideas and strategies within the field of architecture.

In 2018, this free series is focussed on the theme of In-terre-vention and seeks to highlight clever small to large-scale interventions that have an impact beyond their immediate site.  Join us each Tuesday from 13 March to 15 May for these stimulating talks and learn more about our built environment.

Each lecture is livestreamed via Facebook and the SLQ website, you can also be part of the conversation on social media using #archilecture. Videos will be available for viewing online after the event on the APDL Vimeo Channel.

Presented by SLQ in partnership with the UQ School of Architecture. Part of the Asia Pacific Architecture Forum 2018.
