Be inspired by food, live music, exhibitions and hands-on activities at this free multicultural event for all ages.
Pull up a seat and enjoy performances by the Verandah Chix. Grab a bite to eat and immerse yourself in Queensland’s cultural cuisines. Put yourself in the picture in the Queensland Faces exhibition, creating your own photographic portrait to add to the digital gallery. Plus, try your hand at a range of creative workshops for all ages.

The big day of belonging is your chance to tell stories, share with others, and be inspired by our diverse faces and places. Check out some of the activities and workshops available below:
Music on Maiwar 4.30pm–7.00pm | Maiwar Green
A celebration of identity, culture and ancestry through music and dance. Be enchanted by the Verandah Chix with their beautiful songs and rare cultural heritages. Dance with the Brisbane Korean Cultural Centre. Experience the traditions of the Ethiopia Bahil Dance Group. Move to the rhythms of the Burundi Drummers of Brisbane. Hosted by African-Australian community leader, Sharon Orapeleng.
Something Bigger choir 3.30pm - 4.45pm | Auditorium 1, Level 2
Come along to this free rehearsal led by music director Kiri Waiata-Green, learn two songs, then be part of the choir that performs in the finale with the lantern parade at 7pm. Register here for free
Singing with the Chix 5pm – 5.30pm | Maiwar Green
Learn a song and its cultural origins at this workshop with performers from the Verandah Chix. Then sing together onstage at their 6pm performance. All ages and levels of experience welcome. Just turn up !
Lantern making 4.00pm to 6.45pm | Maiwar Green
Drop in anytime to make and decorate a free lantern with Upatree Arts, and then take part in the twilight lantern parade at 7pm.
Lantern Parade 7.00pm to 7.30pm | Maiwar Green
Join the twilight lantern parade as it weaves around the State Library, finishing in a short musical performance. Whether you have made your own lantern, or just want to delight in the spectacle, don’t miss this finale!
Queensland Faces 10am – 6.45pm | Philip Bacon Gallery, level 4
Check out these portraits of Queensland Faces taken across time and cultures that uncover the stories and lives of Queenslanders. Add your photo to the collection and make your voice part of the story.
Peace & Quiet 10am – 6.45pm | SLQ Gallery, level 2
Explore personal, social and political ideas of peace. Peace & Quiet is a community exhibition that collects the thoughts of contemporary Queenslanders at peacetime, against the backdrop of global political conflict.
Talk to me about... 3.00pm – 7:00pm | Maiwar Green
Do you like a good chat? Break the ice and have a chat with your fellow community members. Grab a speech bubble sticker, tell the crowd what you want them to talk to you about, and prepare to talk!
Paper Puppet Town 10:00am – 5.00pm | Knowledge Walk, level 1
Snip, stick, paste, colour. In just a few easy steps create your own puppet character. Stay and play in our paper puppet town —take a photo in the puppet portrait studio and upload it to our SLQ family album.
The Peaceful You 12:00pm – 5:00pm | Knowledge Walk, level 1
Select a range of wearable items that represent a peaceful you. The stylists will help you dress your face and hair to represent your hopes for peace. Your photo will then be taken to be added to the exhibition.
Iconic Queensland Pop-ups 10:00am – 6:30pm | Infozone, level 1
Place yourself inside a 3-D version of an iconic Queensland landscape poster. Play and pose in the picture and reinterpret the story as you like. Snap your photo and share.
Colour me Mindful 3.00pm – 6:30pm | Knowledge Walk, level 1
Intended for adults as much as children, mindful colouring-in is a calming activity where you help colour-in a giant image. Its big…so settle in for a group colour-in on the scale of Zen.
Food & Drink 4.00pm – 7.30pm | Maiwar Green
Purchase a bite to eat or a cool drink at one of the eateries and immerse yourself in Queensland’s local cultural cuisines.
