Conditions of entry

The 2017 Young Writers Award open 1 July and closes 5pm on Thursday 31 August, 2017.

Writers aged 18-25

Please read and follow these conditions of entry to ensure your story will be eligible for Judging.

Eligibility

  • The short story submitted must be an original work written entirely by the entrant. The entry must be written in English and must not currently be under consideration for publication or have been previously published.
  • The entry must not exceed 2,500 words for the 18-25 year old category. To avoid any doubt, a 10% leniency does not apply to this competition. Entries over 2,500 words will not be accepted.
  • The author must be a current resident of Queensland. Proof of residency may be required.
  • The author must be aged between 18 and 25 years as at Thursday 31 August 2017. Proof of age may be required.
  • Entries must be submitted before 5pm on Thursday 31 August 2017.
  • Only one entry per person may be submitted. Entries will not be returned.
  • The judges reserve the right to remove from the competition any entries not complying with these conditions.
  • The 2016 Young Writers Award prize will be awarded to the entry the judges consider to have the highest literary merit. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Prize information

The Winner of the Young Writers Award receives:

  • $2,000 prize money
  • Membership for the Queensland Writers Centre
  • two tickets fir the inaugural Young Writers Conference at State Library of Queensland

The Runner-up receives:

  • $500 prize money
  • membership for the Queensland Writers Centre
  • a ticket to the inaugural Young Writers Conference at State Library of Queensland

Up to four Highly Commended entries will receive:

  • membership for the Queensland Writers Centre
  • a ticket to the inaugural Young Writers Conference at State Library of Queensland

Entrants grant the State Library of Queensland a 12-month non-exclusive worldwide license to publish their entered work in digital (e.g. SLQ website or e-book) or printed format. Entrants retain copyright to their work.

Award winners will be required to participate in media interviews associated with the announcement of the Young Writers Award. These interviews will be coordinated by the State Library’s Marketing and Communications team.

Award winners will be required to have their photo taken for publicity purposes.

How To Enter the YWA Category for Writers Aged 18-25

Story format:

  • Stories must be submitted as a Word or .rtf document. Please do not send a PDF
  • The entry must be typed in black, size 12 Arial font with double line spacing.
  • Include the title of your story in the header of each page.
  • Please number the pages of your entry.
  • Submissions are judged anonymously. Please do not include your name on any page of your story.
  • Word Count cannot exceed 2,500 words (excluding the title).

A Story Template  (DOCX 16.1 KB) has been provided to assist you with your entry.

  1. Please save your document file name as follows: “YWA 18-25 Title of Story Here” for example “YWA 18-25 Once Upon a Time”. Do not include your name anywhere in the file name.
  2. Entries must be submitted via the online form by 5pm on Thursday 31 Augustr 2017.
    You will be required to enter your contact details and upload your story as a Word or .rtf document to complete your entry.

Writers aged 15-17

Please read and follow these conditions of entry to ensure your story will be eligible for Judging.

Eligibility

The short story submitted must be an original work written entirely by the entrant. The entry must be written in English and must not currently be under consideration for publication or have been previously published.

  • The entry must not exceed 1,500 words for the 15-17 year old category. To avoid any doubt, a 10% leniency foes not apply to this competition. Entries over 1,500 words will not be accepted
  • The author must be a current resident of Queensland. Proof of residency may be required.
  • The author must be aged between 15 and 17 years as at 31 August 2017. Proof of age may be required.
  • Entries must be submitted before 5pm on Thursday 31 August 2017.
  • Only one entry per person may be submitted. Entries will not be returned.
  • The judges reserve the right to remove from the competition any entries not complying with these conditions.
  • The 2017 Young Writers Award prize will be awarded to the entry that the judges consider to have the highest literary merit. The decision of the judges is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Prize Information

The Winner of the Young Writers Award receives:

  • $500 prize money
  • membership for the Queensland Writers Centre.
  • two tickets to the inaugural Young Writers Conference at State Library of Queensland

The Runner-up receives:

  • $200 prize money
  • membership for the Queensland Writers Centre
  • a ticket to the inaugural Young Writers Conference at State Library of Queensland

Up to four (4) Highly Commended entries receive:

  • A Book Pack from The Library Shop
  • membership for the Queensland Writers Centre.
