Make your summer a story to remember at State Library of Queensland!

Boasting a choose-your-own adventure program of free activities and our popular Story Lab workshop series, Summer Festival is bursting with fabulous imaginative fun for children, young people and families.

Start with some classic story-telling or arts and crafts. Get digital with workshops in coding, robotics, virtual reality, augmented reality and 360 film-making. Go from creative writing to creating your own picture book. Explore the free activities, exhibitions and interactive installations.

Summer Festival is SLQ’s biggest holiday program ever. The schedule changes daily and will continue evolving throughout the holidays, so visit often and discover the latest chapter.

Story Lab Arcade

25 Nov–22 Jan, 10am–5pm | SLQ Gallery | Ages 6+

Tech meets play in the Story Lab Arcade, a 21st century playground in the Digital Futures Lab! Step into the Story Lab Arcade, an interactive space to play and create using emerging technologies. Remix animations, watch films in 360° and immerse yourself in virtual worlds. From 30 December, the Story Lab Arcade will showcase Virtual Reality environments, 360° films and animated mash-ups created by young people through the Story Lab workshops.

Imagination Playscape & Storytime

18 Dec–21 Jan, 10am–3pm | The Parlour | Ages 0-12

The Imagination Playscape is a space for children under 12 and their parents, carers and friends, to design, create and build together. Providing an assortment of objects and loose parts, the Imagination Playscape challenges children and their family with hands-on, minds-on play! Our storytellers will also bring picture books to life during special Storytime sessions, held daily at 10.30am, 12pm and 1.30pm (capacity is limited).

Play Publishing House

18 Dec–21 Jan, 10am–3pm | Knowledge Walk | All ages

Author, illustrate and publish your very own picture book at the Play Publishing House, a hands-on creation station for all ages to enjoy. Learn a simple technique for folding an eight-page book, get crafty with words and collage and use our high tech book reproduction robot to publish a copy for yourself and one for our growing collection.

Tech Play Pop-Up

18 Dec–21 Jan, 10am–3pm | Knowledge Walk | All ages

Get interactive on the big screen! Drop by the Tech Play Pop-Up to experience technology that gets you moving, thinking, planning, scanning, and most importantly, playing! This interactive space will feature a range of digital installations, events and showcases that constantly change throughout Summer Festival.

The Corner: Colour My World

18 Dec–21 Jan, 10am–3pm | The Corner | Ages 0-8

Come down to The Corner and play your way through our interactive environment carefully prepared for children from birth through to eight years of age. From the high-tech to low-tech and tactile, our current Colour My World theme provides a rainbow of opportunities for children and families to imagine, play and create together.

Please Note: All children under 12 must be supervised by a parent/carer.

We e-Publish

19, 20, 23 Dec & 2–6 Jan & 16-20 Jan, 3 x sessions daily | Ages 3–8

10am, 11.30am, 1pm. Working with friends, family and our designers, children can use the WePublish app for iPad to write and illustrate their very own picture book. Once completed, head to the Play Publishing House and use our high-tech book reproduction robot to publish a copy for yourself and one for our collection.These workshops are designed for children and parents/carers, with two to five group participants per booking / minimum of one adult.

RoboPets

With Tech Girls Movement

19–23 Dec, 3 x sessions daily | Ages 6–9

11am, 12.30pm, 2pm. What will the robot companions of the future look like? Design, construct and train a futuristic pet using Lego and Edison Robots, then play with your pet and others in our RoboPet play park! These workshops are designed for children and parents/carers, with two to five group participants per booking / minimum of one adult.

Physical Futures

Mon 8 & 15 Jan, 10am–12pm (ages 12–14) & 1pm–3pm (ages 15–16)

How do you feel about the future? What can we do to shape and create the future we want to see? Go way beyond talking about the future and take action in this drama-based workshop. Be provoked and inspired by some big ideas in a guided tour of the Digital Futures Lab. Then share, explore, and physicalise the future with your peers through futures-thinking and drama.

Maze VR

9–13 Jan, 3 x sessions daily | Ages 8–12

10am, 11.45am, 1.45pm. Design and construct a real world ball maze and then use the Maze VR app to transform it into a virtual reality environment that can be edited, embellished and explored by the whole family. We will provide one mobile device and Google Cardboard set for each booking. Maze VR at-home kits and Google Cardboard are available for purchase from the SLQ Library Shop. These workshops are designed for children and parents/carers, with two to five group participants per booking / minimum of one adult.

With Tech Girls Movement

11am, 12.30pm, 2pm. Meet Cubetto, a little wooden robot ready to play games and tell your story. In this fun, hands-on tech workshop for families, you can learn the basics of coding through play, without a screen in sight! These workshops are designed for children and parents/carers, with two to five group participants per booking / minimum of one adult.

The ever popular Story Lab workshops return for Summer Festival, with young people in the captain’s seat as explorers on the frontiers of STEAM and creativity, alongside industry professionals as their trusty co-pilots.

Workshops are fully supervised, with all equipment and materials supplied.

Virtual Reality Club

Three-day intensive with Immerse Academy

18–20 Dec, 9am–2pm | Ages 8–16 | $120

Take a leap into the virtual in this three-day workshop! Develop, build and explore a virtual reality environment for the HTC Vive using Industry-standard software, Unity 3D. Whether you’re developing VR skills for the first time, or are familiar with the basics of the process, this workshop is an opportunity to explore the powerful potential of VR as you engage in an in-depth design, development and testing process. The VR environments created in these workshop sessions will be showcased in the Story Lab Arcade from Saturday 30 December to Monday 22 January.

App Animation Mash-Up

Transform and remix digital images from SLQ’s collections, and then turn your creations into collaborative animations using the new Tagtool app for iPad. At the end of the day, stream your masterpiece to the big screen at the Tech Play Pop-Up in a live animation showcase.

Capturing 360° Perspectives

Explore the creative potential of 360° cameras in this filmmaking workshop with a difference! Capturing a 360° perspective, you will collaboratively produce short films to express what the world looks like from your own unique point of view. The 360° films created in these workshops will be showcased in the Story Lab Arcade from Saturday 30 December to Monday 22 January.

RoboCreatures

What robotic creatures will share our world in the future? To answer that question, turn on your futurist thinking cap, explore the capabilities of the Lego compatible Edison robots, and then design, build, and program your own futuristic RoboCreature. Before the day is done, show off your futuristic creation in a live demo at the Tech Play Pop-Up!

Duct Tape Island

You are part of an envoy of young engineers stranded on a deserted island. The only supply you have at your disposal: duct tape. In this creative engineering challenge, work in groups to design and craft as many useful objects out of duct tape as you possibly can. Who knows, one of them might save your life, get you rescued, or become the world’s next great invention!

Dimity Powell believes picture books are soul food, to be consumed at least 10 times a week. If these aren't available, she’ll settle for ice-cream. In this interactive workshop, join Dimity to explore the artful mechanics of picture books, flex your writing muscles and discover how to make your words and pictures shine, no matter what you’re writing.

Digital Futures

The Digital Futures Lab in the SLQ Gallery is a free interactive experience which is part studio, part game space, part exhibition. Explore smart cities and digital bodies, real life robots and risky algorithms. Immerse yourself in virtual worlds, learn mindfulness from a machine, and share your dreams and predictions for the future. Experience future fashion and wearable technology and learn how to pilot a drone simulator. Those who come to the Lab will receive information, hands-on tech experiences and be presented with provocative questions to prompt inquisitive thinking and spark the imagination.

Magnificent Makers

Open daily until 3 Jun 2018, 10am–5pm | Philip Bacon Heritage Gallery, level 4 | Free

Visit the Philip Bacon Heritage Gallery to take a trip through Magnificent Makers, an exhibition that tells the story of curious creators, daring discoverers and imaginative inventors. Trace a path through Queensland's history from the late nineteenth century to the present day. Book in to hold history in the palm of your hands in a family-friendly white gloves tour. Sign up for a free workshop to learn about cyanotypes and create your own beautiful ‘photographs’ using this fascinating technique which combines specially treated paper and the sun.
