Preserving Queensland newspapers

Commercial microfilm services | More information

Newspapers are an important resource for researching, preserving and sharing our stories - as a nation, or within communities and families. Because these publications are typically produced on low grade paper, they deteriorate rapidly with age. Microfilming these important documents ensures their long term preservation.

National Plan for Australian Newspapers (NPLAN)

The State Library of Queensland's newspaper preservation activities are in line with the National Plan for Australian Newspapers Project (NPLAN) [new window].

The image on the left is of the only remaining edition of the Herbert River Express 1910.  This newspaper was fire and water damaged.  It was retrieved from the local area and included in the State Library's NPLAN program.

The image on the right is of the same newspaper undergoing conservation treatment.

Commercial microfilm service

The State Library has two linear kilometres of original newspapers, of which over 300 Queensland titles have been captured to preservation microfilm, with some titles also available on microfiche. As well, we hold a selection of Queensland Government Gazettes, Parliamentary Papers and manuscripts. The State Library offers a fee based service for the provision of duplicate microfilm and microfiche derived from our master holdings.
