Request a loan (deliver to My Public Library)

If you are a Queensland resident you can request a loan from the Information Collection to be sent to your nearest Queensland public library.

1. Who can request?

Anyone who lives in Queensland and has a State Library of Queensland membership. Not a member? Join now.

If you live outside of Queensland you can request a loan through the interlibrary loan service offered by your library.

Brisbane City Council (BCC) library is not participating in the Request a loan (deliver to My Public Library) service. If your nearest Queensland public library is a BCC branch, to borrow or request a loan you can:

  • visit us to borrow directly from SLQ
  • visit your nearest BCC library branch to request an interlibrary loan

2. Do I need to be a member of SLQ and my public library?

Yes. You need to be a member of SLQ in order to place your request, and you need to be a member of your public library in order to borrow the item once it is supplied.

If you wish to borrow items directly from State Library, you also need to have your membership upgraded with borrowing privileges.  Please see Borrowing at State Library for identification requirements

3. What can I request?

You may request a range of items from the Information Collection. For more information refer to What can I borrow?

Some items are not available for loan, but can be used onsite at SLQ. This includes fragile items and high use items, as well as the John Oxley Library and Australian Library of Art collections.

4. How do I make a request?

Login to One Search with your SLQ membership; find the title you want then:

  1. Select Locations/Request tab
  2. Select Request
  3. Select Pickup location "My Public Library"
  4. Enter your nearest Queensland public library in the comments field
  5. Select Request to submit

Your request will be processed and sent to your nominated Queensland public library for collection.

5. How will I know if my request was successful?

SLQ will send you a confirmation email to advise if your request was successful and your item has been posted to your public library.  Please ensure your contact details are up to date.  You can view and update your contact details in One Search My Account.

Some items may have access restrictions eg. shorter loan period or only for use in your public library. If there are loan restrictions associated with your request, SLQ will advise you prior to sending the item to your public library.

6. How will I know my request has arrived at my library?

Your public library will contact you once your item is ready for collection.

7. How long will it take to receive my request?

Your request will take approximately 1-2 weeks to be delivered to your nearest public library. Delivery to libraries in the far north or west regions may take slightly longer.

8. Who do I contact if I want to ask about my request?

You can email questions regarding your request to ill@slq.qld.gov.au.

Please provide your name, SLQ membership username or SLQ library barcode number and title/s you have requested.

9. How do I cancel my request?

You can cancel your request in the following ways:

  • via My Account in One Search
  • email ill@slq.qld.gov.au. Please provide your name, SLQ membership username or SLQ library barcode number and title/s you have requested

10. What if I don't collect my request?

Requests not collected will incur your public library's standard processing fee.

Please contact your public library to confirm any fees or charges.

11. How much does it cost?

Some libraries may charge a request or interlibrary loan fee.

Please contact your public library to confirm if any fees or charges apply before placing your request.

12. How many items can I borrow?

You will be borrowing from your public library; please check if they have a request or interlibrary loan limit before placing your requests with SLQ.

13. How long may I borrow?

Your public library's borrowing privileges and conditions apply.

Please check with your public library regarding their borrowing periods.

14. How do I request an item that is not currently available (on loan)?

Follow the steps under 'How do I make a request'.

SLQ will email you once the item is available and has been posted to your public library.

Your public library will contact you once your item is ready for collection.

15. How do I renew my items?

Your items have been borrowed from your public library. Please contact them to arrange a renewal.

You public library's borrowing privileges and conditions apply. Please check with your public library regarding their renewal conditions and procedures.

16. Where do I return my loans?

Return items to the same public library you borrowed them from. Your public library will arrange for items to be returned to SLQ.

17. How do I find my nearest public library?

If you are not sure where your nearest library is located, enter your postcode or suburb into the find branches near me search function of the Directory of Queensland Public Libraries.

18. Why have my requests disappeared from My Account in One Search?

Your requests (loans) are not recorded in My Account but are recorded against your public library account.

If your request is successful you will receive a confirmation email. If you have not received a confirmation email within 5 working days please contact ill@slq.qld.gov.au.

19. What are my borrowing responsibilities?

Your contact details will be supplied to your public library for the purpose of processing your loan request.
