Images of War: A-L

The collections of the John Oxley Library, State Library of Queensland contain a wide variety of material related to the First World War, including photographs, documents, newspapers, diaries, maps, posters, books, magazines, letters, and medals.

Through this rich resource of manuscripts and memorabilia we can reach into the lives of the men and women who served – soldiers, nurses, chaplains, and the families they left behind.

These guides provide links to resources throughout the Library, as well as external websites, and a bibliography containing selections for both general and younger readers.

Bell Family papers

Bell, Bertram Charles

Four albums relating to Bertram Bell, who took the first 'Queensland Red Cross' motor ambulance to France in 1914. Bell returned to England in 1915 where he obtained his pilot’s license, was commissioned as a flight sub-lieutenant and flew for the Royal Naval Air Service.

Burley Family records

Brett, Robert Cyril Palmer

Diaries, albums, letters and loose photographs relating to the service of Sergeant Cyril Brett of the 25th Infantry Battalion, during the First World War in Gallipoli and France. Cyril Brett who was born on Beaufort Station – Alpha, later resided in Warwick and Yeerongpilly.

Lisca Bridgeman Autograph Albums

Bridgeman, Lisca

Two autograph albums kept by Lisca Bridgeman from ca. 1905 to the 1950s. Entries are predominantly from her time at Lewisham Military Hospital, London. She nursed and fell in love with an injured Australian soldier Adam Bowman. Upon his discharge, they moved to Queensland, where they were married in 1918.

From Cyril Andrew Burdeu Papers and Photographs

Burdeu, Cyril Andrew

Approximately 50 images of Egypt and Gallipoli that relate to Cyril Burdeu's service with the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade during the First World War. Cyril Burdeu was killed by stray shrapnel while directing artillery fire as a range-taker, in his dugout on the 9th May 1915.

Butler Family autograph albums

Butler, Arthur Graham & Ethel Brice

Includes several photographs of Captain, later Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Graham Butler, who distinguished himself as a senior Medical Officer in Gallipoli and the Western Front; as well as several of his sister, Nurse Ethel Brice Butler who served with the AANS in Gallipoli, Egypt and India.

Chaille family photographs

Chaille, Patrick

Images relating to Sergeant William (Pat) Mapon Chaille, who served with the 5th Light Horse Regiment in Gallipoli, Palestine. He was killed in action after encountering German snipers near the river Jordan, then Palestine.

Corkling, Winifred

An album of postcards sent to Winifred Corkling by her fiancée Richard Clyde Beech, between 1914 and 1918. Richard Beech was a merchant seaman who served as a Fireman on SS Echunga.

Croll, David Gifford

Photographs kept by Doctor D. G. Croll while serving in the First World War. Colonel David Croll was Commanding Officer of the 2nd Light Horse Field Ambulance and later Assistant-Director of Medical Services for the Anzac Mounted Division. He served in Gallipoli and the Middle East before returning to Australia in 1919.

Elliot, Alwynne Guy

Alwynne Elliot served with the 5th Light Horse Regiment. He was wounded at Gallipoli and repatriated to Brisbane. His collection of two pocket sized albums depict a parade at Enoggera Army barracks and views across the river from the Hospital at Kangaroo Point.

Gallipoli postcards

Photographs and other correspondence relating to the service of  Major General Sir Thomas William Glasgow who enlisted with the 2nd Light Horse Regiment in 1914. He landed with his unit at Anzac on 12 May 1915 and was later appointed commander of 13th Infantry Brigade and the 1st Division AIF.

The sons are Huntley - 4th LH Field Ambulance; Harvey - Divisional Ammunition Corps; Norman - 3rd Field Artillery Brigade; Douglas & Kenneth, 5th LH Regiment; Leslie, 2nd LH Regiment.

Gregory, Ernest Gordon

Private Ernest Gordon Gregory, from Toowong enlisted in October 1915, aged 27. He served with the 25th Infantry Battalion in France and was severely wounded in the legs. He died in hospital at Boulogne in August 1916. The item is a large framed portrait of Gregory taken before he embarked for service overseas in 1915.

Photograph album containing images of the German tank ‘Mephisto’ captured during the First World War, arriving at the old Queensland Museum, Bowen Hills, Brisbane, as well as images of peace celebrations in Brisbane in 1919 and Anzac Day in Brisbane in 1920.

Postcards sent by Frederick George Hall from Bundaberg, a Sergeant in the 15th Infantry Battalion, who was stationed in France during the First World War. The majority of the postcards depict sights in England and Scotland. One shows Queenslanders of the 15th Infantry Battalion on parade ready for inspection.

Henderson Family & Jimboomba Station Papers

Henderson, Lindsay

Photographs and correspondence relating to Lieutenant James Lindsay Henderson during his service with the 2nd Light Horse Regiment in the Middle East during the First World War. Lindsay Henderson awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry however he was tragically killed in a riding accident just a few months after his return to Australia.

Hoy, William

Album of First World War photographs including troop ships; scenes at Gallipoli and France; troops in London; peace procession in Brisbane; 'Flora Sanders' who fought with the Serbian Army during WW1. William Hoy, from Rockhampton, was a gunner and driver with the 7th & 9th Field Artillery Brigades, he returned to Australia in 1917 after being wounded in action.

Hutchinson postcards

Greeting cards, postcards and correspondence sent to and by Charles and Richard Hutchinson during both World Wars.  Lance Corporal Charles Hutchinson served with the 4th Light Trench Mortar Battery and was awarded the Military Medal in 1917.

George Jackman was the Southport correspondent for the Daily Mail from 1924, and after 1933, for the Courier Mail. The collection includes two photograph albums, which contain images of Anzac Day parades and ceremonies.

Photograph album compiled by Sybil Lavarack, the wife Lieutenant Colonel John Dudley Lavarack. During the First World War he saw extensive service in the British and Australian Forces, and was awarded the DSO, the French Croix de Guerre and Mentioned in Despatches three times. In 1919 he was appointed C.M.G.
