Images of War: M-Y
The collections of the John Oxley Library, State Library of Queensland contain a wide variety of material related to the First World War, including photographs, documents, newspapers, diaries, maps, posters, books, magazines, letters, and medals.
Through this rich resource of manuscripts and memorabilia we can reach into the lives of the men and women who served – soldiers, nurses, chaplains, and the families they left behind.
These guides provide links to resources throughout the Library, as well as external websites, and a bibliography containing selections for both general and younger readers.
Mander Family Papers
Several images relating to Mary Mander (nee Hodgkinson) who served a nurse in in England and Charles Mander who served in the 26th Infantry Battalion in France in the First World War. After the war ended, Mary decided to emigrate to Australia and met Charles Mander on the troopship Matachewan. They married in 1920 in Ipswich.

Large family collection of letters and photographs that relate to the service of three brothers who were doctors in the First World War. Alexander Marks served as a Regimental Medical Officer to the 3rd Field Artillery Brigade, 2nd Field Ambulance and 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station in Gallipoli and France.

McKie Family Papers
Photographs and correspondence relating to the service of Lieutenant Kenneth Clinton McKie from South Brisbane, who served with the 49th Infantry Battalion in France and Belgium during the First World War. He died of wounds in June 1917 and is buried in Trois-Arbres Cemetery, France.

Negatives and photographs taken in France during First World War possibly by John Fraser Pittendreigh from Esk, who served with the Army Medical Corps. William Oakhill from Wondai, Queensland served with the 42nd Infantry Battalion, he returned to Australia in 1917 medically unfit after gas poisoning.

Photograph Album Australian Army WW1

Photographs and postcards from Lionel R Rawson to his parents. Lionel served with a Queensland contingent in South Africa and later gained a commission as Captain with the English King's Royal Rifles. There are also embroidered greeting cards written by Will Cresswell.

Rooks, Albert James
Three albums and thirty-four loose photographs and postcards. Albert James Rooks, served as an ambulance driver with the 1 Australian General Hospital. The photographs include images of unidentified soldiers, 1 Australian General Hospital, HMAT Afric, Aldwych & the YMCA in London.

2nd Light Horse Association
Includes photograph albums, diaries and journals of Rev George Green, Dec 1914 - Aug 1915. Rev George Green enlisted with the AIF in September 1914 and was commissioned as a Captain Chaplain. He served with the 1st Light Horse Regiment on Gallipoli, and later at Caestre, France.

Thompson, Joseph Cecil
Photographs relating to Joseph Thompson’s service in the First World War. Sergeant Joseph Cecil Thompson #494 was a farrier from Childers who served with the 9th Battalion as a stretcher bearer, in Gallipoli and later in France and Belgium.

Thurecht, Edward Peter
One postcard depicting a group of 15 allied prisoners of war, Czersk, Poland during the First World War. Lance Corporal Edward Thurecht from Gympie served with the 47th Infantry Battalion. He was captured in 1917.

Vickers, Robert Cyril
148 photographs and postcards arranged in one album. Robert Cyril Vickers was born in Rockhampton 5 May 1895. He enlisted on 12 August 1915 and served in the 1st Light Horse Brigade Train.

Walsh, James Alexander
French silk embroidered postcard sent by Lance Corporal James Alexander Walsh to his aunt. The postcard also has the words "Good Luck" embroidered on the front. Jim Walsh served with the 2nd Australian Pioneer Battalion, and was killed on the 21st October, 1917, near Ypres.

Warner, Adeline Mary
The handmade embroidered postcard book was made by Adeline Mary Warner as a child. One of the postcards is from her older brother, Gordon Warner, while serving as a soldier in France during the First World War; the others are from family members and friends.

Percival Watkins enlisted in 1916 in the 9th Infantry Battalion in Queensland and sailed on HMAT Boonah in October of that year. He returned to Australian in February 1918 suffering from tuberculosis.

Includes black and white photographs of Y.M.C.A. voluntary lady workers in their uniforms. Photos are enclosed in original envelopes produced by Y.M.C.A. as well as a post card printed with 27 female volunteers in their uniforms.
