Stolen Generations

Stolen Generations is a term used to describe the separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families. This practice, carried out by Commonwealth and State governments and church missions, took place between approximately 1869 - 1969.

The Stolen Generations received significant public attention around Australia following the publication, in 1997, of the Bringing them home report in response to a National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families.

On 13th February 2008, the then Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd made a formal apology to the Stolen Generations. You can read the speech here.
