Dr Barbara Piscitelli AM Children’s Art Archive
The Dr Barbara Piscitelli AM Children’s Art Archive was donated to the State Library by curator and guardian, Dr Barbara Piscitelli AM in 2006.
The Children's Art Archive contains a significant collection of drawings and paintings made by children in Queensland, Vietnam and China between 1986 and 2007. The works represent views of children on topics about their identities, social worlds and human rights. The archive provides an understanding of the lives of children, of contemporary Queensland’s cultural identity, and of comparative studies with children in Asia.
The State Library has made a commitment to grow the Children’s Art Archive and has already completed the Children’s Picture Diaries Project involving Ipswich Public Library, Cherbourg Indigenous Knowledge Centre, Kelvin Grove State College and Poruma in the Torres Strait in 2007. The project has added over 300 new works to the archive as well as four virtual books.
The archive forms part of the Original Materials Collection of the John Oxley Library. With the assistance of Dr Piscitelli it provides inspiration for exhibition and programming themes for The Corner with a permanent exhibition of digitised works from the archive.
