About Look!

The State Library of Queensland presented Look! The art of Australian picture books today, a touring exhibition of original artworks from some of Australia’s most accomplished children’s book illustrators.

Created by the State Library of Victoria, Look! includes 112 artworks by leading Australian illustrators including Shaun Tan, Graeme Base, Bob Graham, Gregory Rogers, Leigh Hobbs, Lucia Masciullo, Stella Danalis and Frané Lessac.

This delightful exhibition displays sketches, drafts, mock-ups, finished artwork and publications as well as multimedia presentations to demonstrate the various stages of developing contemporary Australian picture books.

Look! gives children a chance to see artwork from their favourite stories up close, and explore the process of visual storytelling.

The exhibition is sure to spark the imagination of young and old, with visitors invited to take part in the colourful events and programs associated with this exhibition.

The launch of Look! was celebrated at a Family Fun Day on Saturday 3 December, 2011.

Look! was part of the National Year of Reading 2012. State Library of Queensland has joined with Australian libraries and library associations to turn 2012 into the National Year of Reading. We aim to help all Australians to understand the benefits of reading as a life skill and a catalyst for well-being; to promote a reading culture in every home; and to encourage families to share books with their children every day.

This exhibition was supported by Visions of Australia, an Australian Government program supporting touring exhibitions by providing funding assistance for the development and touring of Australian cultural material across Australia.
