Policies, standards and protocols

Documents to assist public library staff in the day to day running of their library and to assist in the development of their own library documentation.

Collection Development Policy is intended to guide recommending officers, selectors, collections managers and other staff in the development of the State Library of Queensland's collections.

A Protocol establishing roles and responsibilities of the Queensland Government and Local Government in respect of the provision and management of public libraries [new window Document in PDF format 43 kb] - A Protocol made 5 December, 1997 between the State of Queensland and the Local Government Association of Queensland.

Queensland Public Library Standards and Guidelines are designed as guidelines for current practice and to provide achievable goals for public libraries in Queensland. The Standards are seen as a guide towards achieving 'best practice' for those responsible for the management of public library services.

Sample customer service charter [new window PDF Document Icon 259 kb] - A sample of a customer service charter for public libraries, with notes to assist libraries in developing their own charters.

Service Level Agreement for Public Library Service Provision includes a copy of the Agreement, Public Library Outcomes Report and a Strategic Plan development guide.

Standards for public library services [new window] - An overview of the process of establishing Public Libraries Australia Ltd as a body for national representation of public libraries with the goal of promoting the interests of all public libraries in Australia and advocating on their behalf.

Volunteers in libraries
Many public libraries make good use of volunteers.  The Queensland Public Library Standards and Guidelines - Staffing Standard recommends that written policies should be in place to guide the use of volunteers, including definition of tasks which they should undertake.  Following are sample documents relating to the use of volunteers.
