Literacy Resources

State Library of Queensland and Queensland public libraries are transformative places and literacy is the bedrock of their ethos and rationale. With a focus on engagement, discovery, reading and belonging, libraries offer a specialised workforce, infrastructure, programs and collections to aid literacy support in communities.

The resources available on this web page provide policy direction, useful resources, referrals and a discussion list to encourage the exchange of ideas, research, and links to resources between practitioners, academics, government and non government literacy providers.

Expanding Horizons Family Literacy Forum - The State Library of Queensland, 24 May 2012

Family literacy is defined as literacy programs and activities that are family-centred, usually involving parents and their children, and recognising the importance of intergenerational activity in the development of literacy.

The Expanding Horizons Family Literacy Forum is an opportunity to showcase the achievements of public libraries that were successful in securing funding from the Expanding Horizons grants to create and deliver projects with a focus on family literacy in their own communities. The Expanding Horizons grants are designed to support local governments in the promotion and delivery of family literacy initiatives in or delivered by their public libraries in partnership with other agencies. In 2010-11, a total of $250,000 was on offer to public libraries.

The Expanding Horizons Family Literacy Forum is proud to feature Margaret James as a keynote speaker and will contain a presentation by State Library's Literacy and Young Peoples Services in addition to showcasing the public library Family Literacy initiatives that were funded by through the 2010-11 Expanding Horizons grants. Through the presentations, participants will examine subjects such as: libraries as learning spaces, community engagement, as well as project content and creation.
