English language and literacy programs

A number of community and government organisations and some public libraries offer literacy and language programs in Queensland.  Below is a list of some programs available if your first language is not English or if you want to improve your English.
 
Adult Literacy Program - Sunshine Coast Libraries [new window] - information on free literacy courses provided by Sunshine Coast Libraries.

ARMS ~ Refugee & Migrant Services [new window] - Refugee and migrant support services based in Brisbane and Toowoomba, with a focus on education, literacy and employment opportunities.

Centacare Cairns (Migrant Settlement Services) [new window] - Contact Settlement Workers for access to English classes, interpreting and translation services

Conversational English Group [new window] - Co-ordinated by the Pine Rivers Neighbourhood Centre [new window], this group meets regularly at the Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Northlakes Library. It offers members of the community, who come from a non-English speaking background, an opportunity to practise for free their conversational skills with others.
 
English Conversation CafĂ© [new window] - If your first language is not English or if you want to improve your English conversation skills, visit the Logan City Council Libraries Events Calendar for information on this free regular meeting. 

English language training for migrants and refugees [new window] - TAFE Queensland provides a number of both Commonwealth and State-funded English language training programs designed to prepare migrants and refugees for life and work in Australia.

George Street Neighbourhood Centre Association Inc [new window] (Mackay) Adult literacy and numeracy programs

Learning English in Australia - Adult Migrant English Program [new window] (find out information on learning English in the classroom or at home, find AMEP English classes, etc)

Mount Isa Community Adult Literacy (MICAL) [new window] - Provides adult literacy and numeracy. One to one tutoring for people wishing to learn to read and write. Basic computer skills.

MultiLink Community Services [new window] - Conversational English Classes in Logan

QLD Toowoomba Refugee and Migrant Support Centre (TRAMS) [new window]
Volunteer organisation that assist migrants and refugees with free English classes, homework tutoring, computer classes and other programs

Workplace English Language and Literacy (WELL) [new window] - Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. WELL assists organisations to train workers in English language, literacy and numeracy skills. Funding is available on a competitive grants basis to organisations for English language and literacy training linked to job-related workplace training and is designed to help workers meet their current and future employment and training needs.

Contact your local public library to find out what resources or services they offer to support literacy, numeracy and language learning.

Queensland Public Libraries are invited to contact Inclusive Communities if they would like to provide online links to literacy and language programs they provide for members of the community where English is not their first language or if they want to improve their English.
