Online resources

There is a large range of online resources if your first language is not English, if you want to improve your English, or if you teach English as a Second Language. Check the list of some websites that may be useful:

The Australian Council for Adult Literacy (ACAL) [new window] promotes adult literacy and numeracy policy and practice.

Australian English : Language & Literacy Learning : at the Beach [new window] - a site with lots of adult appropriate reading and writing activities.

English leap [new window] - provides English learning resources and English speaking practice free of cost.

English Zone [new window] - A privately owned personal website that assists with learning English as a Second Language, or studying English in general.

ESL Partyland [new window] provides resources, lessons, and ideas on teaching conversation. There are printable materials for classroom use, a discussion forum and links to other web sites about teaching.

Free English Now: spoken English learned quickly [new window] is a downloadable self-study English course used by professionals and university students.

Literacy Net [new window] - This site contains key information about Australian adult literacy activity and links to a range of additional programs, professional development, resource, and research sites.

Logan City Council Libraries [new window] - browse through some of the reading development resources held in the library. The collection contains material for people who need assistance in learning English. It includes workbooks, graded readers, high interest/low skill material, computer software and audio visual material designed to improve the literacy skills of both English speaking and non-English speaking people.

NSW AMES [new window] - Information about English language classes translated into 15 languages. AMES is the largest publisher of Australian language and literacy resources and teaching materials, and internationally acclaimed for its range of innovative online courses
 
Parent and carer stories [new window] : Achieving literacy and numeracy (Queensland Dept of Education & Training, Literacy and Numeracy) - video clips of parents and carers sharing their stories about literacy and numeracy in daily life and more. English is used in all video clips, with additional languages featured in some clips including: Kriol (Australian Creole language),Kalkadoon (Mt Isa Aboriginal language), Chinese Mandarin, Vietnamese, Sudanese Arabic, Swahili, Tongan, Samoan, Bosnian, Greek and Turkish. Includes handy fact sheets and activity sheets.

Queensland Council for Adult Literacy (QCAL) [new window] is a voluntary non-profit organisation representing Adult Literacy in Queensland.

Reading Writing Hotline [new window] - Australia’s national telephone adult literacy and numeracy referral service

Skillswise [new window] - Improve your English and maths with Skillswise. Includes factsheets, worksheets, quizzes and games to help improve your skills.

Spelling it Right [new window] - Free printable worksheets, help and advice from an experienced English teacher and examiner.

Virtual Independent Learning Centre (VILC) [new window] - online service for English language learners, backed by the resources of AMES, Australia's largest specialist provider of education and employment services for people with a language background other than English.
