The Joys of Motoring

The joys of motoring

The rain is streaming like a monsoon and all of a sudden the whole of the front valance (which holds the wipers on) flings from the bonnet and into the nearby field (nice cow accessory!) My mate had to hang out of the window with a tea towel - not the best imitation I can tell you. Finally with a smashed windscreen and a knackered engine, she gets sold to a mechanic for a whopping £150 - not bad, as the investment was so little.

18th birthday - time for a new car. Preferably with some class and some racing heritage. I go for the MG Metro (glacier white with red trim) - 1275cc of pure mayhem. Quick, small, cheap to run - could you ask for a better motor? Cost £975. Now this car was just begging for a sports upgrade, so I slave away in the fish restaurant stripping crabs of their meat for 6 months in order to get a copy of maxpower. OK - let's go for a rally exhaust (big and noisy), then we need performance air filter, split fire sparkplugs and an induction kit (only £350 <cough>). Nice little rally car. The noise from the exhaust is unreal (as long as you don't want to hear yourself think after 20 mph - fine!), but I loved it and so did the girls.
