Queensland's first cars

First cars collage

At the beginning of the 20th century, the first cars came to Queensland, shaking, popping, fuming and scaring the horses.

With them came the promise of, at last, taming the tyranny of distance. The first cars would have been both status symbols for the owners and entertainment for the locals.

Some were imported complete from the industrial heartlands of Britain, France and the USA, while others were built locally using a few imported mechanical parts, traditional carriage building techniques and a lot of experimentation.
