1. Why do I have to login?

You have to login to access licensed databases offsite from the State Library, ie from your home, office or other computer connected to the internet. The State Library of Queensland, with Queensland public libraries, signs licence agreements with database vendors to provide Queensland residents with access to databases, e-journals and e-books.  Access is via a login account.  Queenslanders login using either e-services cards or QPL (Queensland public library) accounts.

2. How do I login?

Queenslanders login by using either their e-services card or their QPL (Queensland public library) account.

3. What's the difference between an e-services card and a QPL account?

Both e-services cards and QPL accounts give you access to e-journals, offsite databases and e-books from your home, office or any computer connected to the internet. However if you plan to visit the State Library at South Bank and use our onsite services, then you need an e-services card. Onsite services include:

  • booking a computer
  • adding credit for printing and photocopying
  • accessing audio-visual items
  • requesting items from our closed access collections.

A QPL account is your unique login - username and password (chosen by you) - to access offsite databases, e-journals, e-books and other online services.  You have to be a member of a Queensland public library and you get immediate access to online services after you have provided your Queensland public library card number and followed the registration prompts.

When you register for an e-services card, either in person at the State Library or online, you must provide proof of ID and proof that you are a Queensland residency.

4. How do I register for an e-services card?

Registering for an e-services card is easy but you must be either a Queensland resident or a regular client who uses the resources and services of the State Library. Register:

  • onsite - show the required ID to the staff on the Level 3 Information Desk at the South Bank building and they will process your card and give it to you immediately.
  • online - complete the automatic registration form. Your e-services card will be posted to you within 5 working days of receipt of your registration.

5. How do I register for a QPL account?

Registering for a QPL account is easy but you must be a member of a Queensland public library.  Follow the prompt to choose your library from the drop down menu and enter your public library membership barcode or pin number.

Not a public library member? Contact your local public library to become a member.  Find your local public library through the Directory of Queensland public library services.

If you have an e-services card, you do not have to register for a QPL account.Back to top of page

6. What resources can I access when I login?

When you login using either your e-services card or your QPL account you can:

  • access a wide range of services and information including e-journals, offsite databases and other e-resources like e-books
  • personalise your searching by saving searches and setting up alerts (a future enhancement)
  • customise some services - tagging, leaving comments/reviews, setting up a personal list of favourite databases. (coming soon)

In addition, with your e-services card, you can use the State Library's catalogue to:

  • save searches
  • set up alerts
  • check your personal details
  • personalise the catalogue to suit your preferences.

7.  I've lost my e-services card/left my e-services card at home. How can I login?

If you are onsite at the State Library, present your photo ID at the Level 3 Information Desk. Staff will issue you with a replacement card or your barcode number. If you are offsite then please phone: +61 7 3840 7850 or email your details to srlill@slq.qld.gov.au and a replacement card to be mailed out to you.

8.  What do I do if I forget my QPL username or password?

Follow the link to "Forgot your QPL username or password".  Provide your email address and we will ask you the answer to the secret question that you used when you registered.  Your username and password will then be emailed to you.

9. What do I do if I forget my answer to my secret question?

If you forget the answer to the secret question that you provided when you registered then you will have to register for a new QPL account.

10. I know my username and password but I still can't login?

Some databases have a limited number of licences and restrict the number of simultaneous users.  If all licences are all in use, you may not get access. Please try again at a later time.

If you still have login trouble, contact the State Library.

11. I'm in the State Library. Do I need to login?

If you are onsite at the State Library you do not have to login to access e-resources. However, if you wish to personalise your searching - save your searches, save lists of your favourite databases, then you will have to login.

You can use your e-services card to book a computer, print, request items from the catalogue, etc.Back to top of page

12.  I'm not a Queensland resident. Why can't I access online services?

The State Library, with Queensland public libraries, is licensed to provide access to e-journals, databases and other e-resources only to Queensland residents. Non-Queensland residents may access our e-resources onsite at Queensland public libraries or at the State Library at South Bank. Terms and conditions...

13. Are passwords case sensitive?

Yes, they are case sensitive for e-services cards and for QPL accounts eg if your password is Se47bG then you must type Se47bG not se47bg.

14. Why do you send an email activation/verification?

The verification email is sent for your protection. It prevents someone registering in your name without your knowledge and consent.

15. I am using OutLook 2003.  Why don't I receive a verification email?

There is a known error with regard to OutLook 2003 and the method of authentication that we use.  If you do not receive a verification email, please contact the State Library of Queensland [mailto: webmanager@slq.qld.gov.au ]
