1. What is the Get it! service?

Get it! service links you from a citation in a database to the full text article, if available.  Get it! is available wherever you see the button Get it!Get it! also provides links to:

  • an A-Z title list of about 20,000 e-journals, e-books, e-newspapers,
  • a catalogue search option to see if State Library owns a print version,
  • interlibrary loan form if you want us to get an article for you,
  • Ask a librarian form if you need additional help.

2. Who can use Get it! ?

Get it! is available to:

  • all onsite visitors at the State Library of Queensland whether using a public access computer or your wireless laptop,
  • all Queensland residents who have a State Library e-services card or who have a QPL (Queensland public library) account.  You must be a member of a Queensland public library to register for a QPL accountLogin FAQs provide more information on how to register.

3. How can Get it! help me?

When you find an article citation in the database you are searching, you can click on the Get it! button Get it! to see if the full text is available. You don't have to do additional searches yourself - Get it! does the work for you!

4. How do I use Get it!?

Just click Get it! whenever it appears in a database, in the A-Z title list or in Article Finder. Clicking on this button will open a menu which varies depending on whether we can provide the full-text article or resource.  Get it! will link to one or more of the following:

  • full text of the article, if available
  • an automatic search of the State Library catalogue to see if the item is owned by the Library
  • a document delivery (interlibrary loan) form, to request the article if we do not have access to a print or electronic copy
  • a link to Ask us for additional help from a librarian.

5. Why does the number of links in the Get it! window vary?

Get it! is able to analyse a citation and determine which access options/services are available for it. The resulting Get it! menu displays links for only those options/services which are available for the citation supplied. There will be different links for every citation.

6. Why is the full text not always available?

Full text is available when the State Library has subscribed to the electronic version of the particular journal. If the option to link to full text is not on the menu, then we do not have the full text for that journal, or the journal (or the particular volume/issue you need) may not be available in full text. (Older issues are often not available in electronic format; very recent issues may not yet be loaded on the publisher's site.) If a full text link is not shown, be sure to check the catalogue link to see if the journal title is available in print form in the State Library.

7. Will Get it! get me to all the electronic journals that the State Library subscribes to?

No, some journals are not yet Get it! compliant and we cannot link to them. Get it! will be added to more journals as they become compliant.

8. Why are there multiple options for full text for some journals?

There is overlap among our electronic journal collections and databases, so sometimes you will find that the full text is available from more than one source.Back to top of page

9. Why do some full text links take me only to the journal homepage?

Get it! will try to get you as close as it can to the full text of the article. Often, because of the structure of the journal publisher's website, Get it! cannot link directly to full text. Sometimes the best Get it! can do is to take you to the table of contents or the journal's home page, and you will have to navigate the publisher's website yourself to get to the full text. Essentially, a full text link in Get it! means that full text is available, but you may have to follow a few extra links to get to it.

10. Can I use Get it! services remotely (offsite)?

Yes. If you have an e-services card or a QPL account, you can access the Get it!-enabled databases remotely (from your home, office or any computer with an internet connection).  You will be asked to login so that we can verify that you are a Queensland resident and comply with our vendor licencing agreements. Check the Login FAQs for more information.

11. What does a "bad URL,” an "Error 404," or other "not found" message mean?

It is possible that a link may be wrong, or it may be out-of-date because a publisher has made changes to its site. We'd like to know about any problems you encounter so that we can correct them. Please report problems to us.

12. Why didn't the full text link lead me to my article?

There are several possible reasons:

  • Sometimes the article citation appears in a database before the publisher has made the full text available.
  • The publisher or author is withholding, or placing an “embargo”, on the full text of an article or journal.
  • Get it! uses the citation information (volume, issue, and page number) to attempt to link directly to the full text article. If there is a typographical error in the citation, Get it! cannot find the article.

Please let us know about any missing full text articles. Then, check to see if Get it! offers a link to the catalogue so that you can check for the print version.

13. Why are there multiple windows?

When you click on Get it! the Get it! menu displays showing all the options/services available for the article. When you select one of those services, a third window opens offering that service - interlibrary loan form, Ask us. You can resize the windows to suit your viewing preferences. Sometimes windows are hidden behind other windows. Use "Alt+Tab" to easily navigate among the windows. Each window will stay open until you close it. Close only your Get it! windows and not your (original) search window.

14. Why doesn't anything happen when I click on the Get it! link?

If you are using a pop-up blocker eg the Google toolbar, it may stop the browser from opening pop-up windows. You will need to disable pop-ups to allow Get it! to function.

15. Why did my session “time-out” while using Get it! ?

Some databases will time-out after a certain amount of inactivity. If you are viewing full text via a Get it! window, the database will think that you are inactive. You need to stay aware of the time, or the database session may close and you will lose your search.

16. How can I make a comment about Get it! or report a problem?

Please use the report a problem form.Back to top of page

17. Why did I get no hits when I clicked on Check the catalogue? I'm sure the State Library must have this - what happened?

The Get it! link to search the catalogue is a very convenient feature that works most of the time, but it isn't 100% accurate. Because of differences in cataloguing and indexing practices, the search will occasionally not find materials that we do own. Think of Get it! as a convenient shortcut most of the time, but if it turns up no results you should try searching the catalogue yourself. If you do not find what you are looking for, Ask Us!

18. If there is no full text link, does that mean the article is not available?

Not necessarily. State Library staff are working to incorporate as much of our online resources into Get it! as possible, but this is an ongoing process. Also, full text access may not be available for certain (usually older) volumes or journal titles, and the State Library may not have a licence for full text access to that journal.

If Get it! does not provide a link to the full text of an article,  check the catalogue for locations of print materials or for electronic holdings that are not Get it!-enabled. If the State Library does not own the material you need, place a request through Document Delivery.

19. How can I get more help?

If you have questions, please ask us via our Report a problem form.  If you are in the State Library you can also ask for assistance at any of the Information Desks.
