PANDORA Archive

PANDORA [new window http://pandora.nla.gov.au] - Preserving and Accessing Networked Documentary Resources of Australia - is a national archive of Australian online publications and websites.

Background

The National Library of Australia established PANDORA in 1996, in response to the increasing occurrence of Australian information only being published online.  PANDORA has since evolved in to a collaborative national undertaking, and currently ten Australian cultural collecting organisations contribute to the archive.  In 2004, PANDORA was placed on the Memory of the World Australian Register [new window http://www.amw.org.au]

Our involvement

The State Library of Queensland has been an active participant since 2002, enhancing the Queensland content of the archive. Our participation in PANDORA:

  • ensures that Queenslanders have an intermediary to archive Queensland websites so they are preserved for future generations
  • provides selection guidelines which emphasise Queensland content and clarifies the areas State Library takes responsibility for; and
  • ensures that the State Library meets its obligations with regards to the preservation and access of web-based legal deposit

Suggest a site

PANDORA contains a wide range of selected online resources.  These include publications from government agencies, academic institutions and other publishers; the websites of numerous organisations and community groups; and sites covering various subject areas, interests and activities.  Also included are political issues and election campaigns, festivals and events, and Australian personalities.

New resources are added to PANDORA selectively, with an emphasis on collecting and preserving publications and websites considered authoritative, significant and with long-term research value. Your suggestions are important to help ensure that Queensland websites are archived for future generations.  Please consult the selection guidelines [new window 47 Kb Document in PDF format] and submit your site for consideration.back to top
