Queensland Votes

On display in the Talbot Family Treasures Wall, Level 4, State Library of Queensland from 24 September 2011 – 7 May 2012. This virtual exhibition is an excerpt from the physical exhibition.

During every election, political parties create posters to line the streets, fill mailboxes with 'How to Vote' flyers, generate slogans, and adorn voters with campaign badges.

Queensland Votes showcases a fascinating collection of Queensland election memorabilia including posters, political cartoons, websites, t-shirts, badges, life sized Lawrence Springboard cardboard cut out and more from 1920s to current, in a visual story of our state's political campaigning history: the players; the parties; and their bids for Vote 1.

In documenting Queensland's history State Library of Queensland collects election-related materials. The 55 items on display from our collection show how campaign messages, poster artwork and advertising have changed markedly from 1920s to current.

Queensland Votes provides interesting insights into political campaigning history including the progression from engaging famous artists to create poster artwork; and posters deliberately not mentioning the candidate's name; to the engagement of publicists and advertising firms to ensure politicians are well represented in media; and use of Facebook and Twitter to connect with constituents.

Also showcased are a dozen political websites from PANDORA, Australia's web archive, including Pauline Hanson's One Nation website developed in 1998 and Kevin 07 campaign website.
