Meriba Gidhal: Torres Strait Island Treasures of the Margaret Lawrie Collection
Meriba Gidhal: Torres Strait Island Treasures of the Margaret Lawrie Collection was featured in the Talbot Family Treasures Wall, Level 4, State Library of Queensland from 24 October 2009 - 28 February 2010. The following is an excerpt from this exhibition.
This exhibition takes one on a visual journey to Queensland’s most northern islands in the Torres Strait. These 120 or so islands are scattered like gems amid the aqua-green waters where the Coral and Arafura Seas meet.
The selected watercolours, drawings, photographs and books from the diverse Margaret Lawrie Collection illustrate traditional Islander stories and childrens’ games. Most of the art has been created by Torres Strait islanders who worked closely with her when she was in the Torres Strait Islands between 1964 and 1973.
The Margaret Lawrie Collection of the Torres Strait Islander People is part of Original Materials, Heritage Collections, John Oxley Library at the State Library of Queensland, and has been declared part of UNESCO’S Australian Memory of the World Register.
The exhibition title translates to ‘Our Stories’ - Meriba meaning ‘our’ in the eastern-island language and Gidhal meaning ‘stories’ in the western-island language.
