Telegraph Office, Townsville

The Telegraph Office in Townsville, probably taken around the same time as the panorama [John Oxley Library neg. 37672]
In the report of the Colonial Architect's Department for the year 1878, plans were prepared and a contract let for a new Telegraph Office, for the cost of £2,808. It was described as a timber building in the process of erection. Built on the corner of Flinders Street and Denham Street, it was designed by F.D.G. Stanley and constructed by J. and J. Rooney.
"It was obviously in the Regency tradition, with a central porch protruding to break the line of the facade, and dowel-balustraded verandahs sheltering the front on either side. Downstairs, it contained operating and battery rooms and public and private offices. Upstairs was the residence of the Head Operator."
