Castle Hill, Townsville

Castle Hill from the Botanical Gardens, taken ca. 1902 [John Oxley Library neg. 186906]
The feature known as Castle Hill has always been one of Townsville's most prominent natural features, looming directly over the downtown area.
One visiting journalist described this fascinating natural occurrence as follows:
"It is on Castle Hill, however, upon which attention centres. It is a huge barren rock, almost perpendicular, seamed with dark green foliage, and throwing out fascinating streaks of sombre brown, dark green and golden lights as the sun strikes its summit and travels across its face".Townsville 1888, Gibson-Wilde and Dalton, Townsville, JCU Press, 1990
