The Wharf at Port Douglas [John Oxley Library neg. 127772]

Arrivals at Port Douglas, ca. 1917 [John Oxley Library neg. 139676]
The wharf played a central role in the daily business of Port Douglas as a road to the township was not built until 1933 with the opening of the Cook Highway. The town itself was surveyed in 1878, and became a port of entry in the same year, but a wharf was not erected until 1880.
"A decision was made to deepen the creek or inlet, adjoining the township and erect a wharf at the end of Macrossan Street adjoining the Customs House. From the wharf it would be less than half a mile to 20 feet below low water in the roadstead."
