St. Mary's Church, Port Douglas

St. Mary's Church, Port Douglas
St. Mary's Church at Port Douglas [Cairns Post, 23 May 1987, p19]
[John Oxley Library neg. 186898]

The first St Mary's Church was built and opened by Fr Peter Bucas on 06 March 1881, but it was completely destroyed by the cyclone of 16 March 1911.

Foundations for the second church, pictured, were laid in December 1913, but the late arrival of timber from Cairns delayed its building. It was finally opened 31 August 1914.

It was closed in 1988 as the parish prepared to build the third St Mary's Church. For historical preservation Old St Mary's was given to the local community and Port Douglas Restoration Society, who relocated it and renamed it "St Mary's by the Sea".

Thanks to Fr Barry Craig for this information.
