'Faith in Australia' en route to New Guinea with the air mail [John Oxley Library neg. 127100]
One of the many attractions of Port Douglas is the fine hard beach, called Four Mile Beach, considered to be one of the north's best. The sand is so firm that the beach has been used for horse races, motor cycle races and foot races and also as a landing place by Kingsford Smith and by C.T.P. Ulm en route to New Guinea with the first official air mail.
Ulm was flying 'Faith in Australia' (VH UXX), leaving Point Cook on 24th July 1934 and stopping at various points along the way to collect more mail. The last Australian pick up was at Port Douglas, the letters and parcels arriving at Port Moresby on the 26th July.
