[John Oxley Library neg. 91024]
The 'Royal George Hotel' appears to have begun its existence as the Nambour Coffee Palace, an unlicensed premise, in around 1911. G.L. Bury inserted an advertisement in the Nambour Chronicle on the 1st July of that year, stating that accommodation was now available for travellers and boarders. In 1913 a licence was gazetted for what had since become the Royal George Hotel.
This image was taken in 1929, when the licensee was E.A. Ashby. One of the Moreton Sugar Mill's cane locomotives, being used as a weekend passenger train is standing outside the hotel. The tramway system was often used for social outings by local community groups.
