Stupart's Drapery, Maryborough

George Stupart's Drapery Palace, illustrated in the 1890s [John Oxley Library neg. 1438]
The Victoria Store in Kent Street, built originally for Wilson & Co. in 1868, was purchased in 1871 by George Stupart. He extended it in 1874 to the corner of Bazaar Street, but in the great fire of 1876 the old and new buildings were completely destroyed.
"About twenty minutes after the fire first broke out, the brick premises of Messrs Stupart and Young commenced to smoke, and the intense heat prevented anyone standing on the roof and fighting the fire ... From Messrs Stupart and Young's drapery establishment at the corner of Bazaar and Kent Streets, to the Queen's Hotel at the corner of Kent and Adelaide Streets, the whole of the buildings, including those premises, have been levelled with the ground."
Maryborough Chronicle, 3 February 1876
In May 1882 F.D.G. Stanley the well known architect opened a branch office in Maryborough, and was responsible for a later design for Stupart's, shown here. It was an elaborate two storeyed building, aptly named Stupart's Drapery Palace.
