Post Office, Mackay

The Post Office at Mackay in the late 1890s [John Oxley Library neg. 6603]
A new Telegraph and Post Office, two similar buildings with a connecting tower, was designed by the Brisbane architect George St Paul Connolly, who became the Colonial Architect in 1885. The Post Office was a two storeyed building, with a well constructed staircase of cedar, elegant balustrades, and handsome newells. The balcony was ten feet wide, with a pretty and light palisade of ironwork, and french lights opening onto the balcony. Inside there were living quarters, each room having a ventilator. The front office measured 44 feet by 18 feet, with 15 feet 9 inch ceilings.
