Prince of Wales Hotel, Mackay

The Prince of Wales Hotel at Mackay [John Oxley Library neg. 186958]
The Week, one of Queensland's early newspapers, describes in December 1881 a large lamp just completed by Mr Walters, a plumber working in Mackay. The lamp:
"had been made to the order of Mr John Murtagh, Mackay, who intends it to hang in front of the Prince of Wales Hotel, which has lately been erected at the corner of Sydney Street, Mackay. The lamp is a triangular one, with three faces, two of which will, from the position in which it is to be erected, face either street, and the other will throw a light upon the wharves, which are directly opposite the hotel. It is to be hung on a large iron rod upon which it can easily be turned in any direction, and it will no doubt be considered a great boon and be thoroughly appreciated by the people of Mackay."
The Week, 3 December 1881, p.534
The 'Prince of Wales Hotel' was advertised in the 1890s as being "the only first class hotel in town," when good food, good beds and good paddocks were the criteria to attract patrons.
