Claremont, one of Ipswich's oldest and grandest residences, is located at 1A Milford Street, on the eastern side of downtown Ipswich, overlooking the Bremer River. A contemporary newspaper described the new residence as follows:

"Turning our steps in the direction of the Limestone Ridge, the most prominent object that meets the eye is the new and elegant stone mansion recently erected for John Panton Esq. from his own design, and under the architectural superintendence of Messrs Wakeling and Casey of this town.

This beautiful structure contains eighteen rooms, some of which are twenty four feet in length and eighteen feet in breadth, and of proportionate height. It has a double roof, and the outer one is covered with the best countess' slates, with numerous ornamental chimneys, and is finished in capital style.

There will be upwards of 350 feet of verandah round the house, forming a most admirable promenade in all seasons, and the prospect from which is most agreeable and extensive, commanding as it does a splendid view of the valleys of the Bremer and the Brisbane, with the fine mountain scenery in the background.

When finished, this fine building will be an ornament to the town, and its construction is alike creditable to the taste and enterprise of the proprietor."

North Australian, 7 April 1857
