St. Stephen's Presbyterian Church

St. Stephen's Presbyterian Church, Ipswich
St. Stephen's Presbyterian Church, Ipswich, ca. 1885, printed from a glass plate negative
[John Oxley Library neg. 21971]

An earlier church had been erected for the Presbyterian congregation in Ipswich, however the foundations had proved to be faulty, leading to its demolition and a new structure being built on the same site. Joseph Backhouse, the brother of Benjamin, has been credited with the design of St. Stephen's, though possibly in reality he may have been working with his brother's plans, and only supervising the construction.

The foundation stone was laid in August 1865 and the church was completed at a cost of £3397/1/11. The steeple was a prominent feature of the building, which was considered to be an ornament to the town of Ipswich.
