The 1910 fire, Cloncurry

The Cloncurry fire of 1910 [John Oxley Library neg. 19174]
"In earlier years fires, both accidental and deliberate, did much in shaping Cloncurry's townscape with hotels being particularly prone to fire outbreaks. The Post Office Hotel at Cloncurry was twice destroyed by fire, and was eventually replaced by a concrete structure to avoid a recurrence."
The Cloncurry Story, Perry Hardy, Cloncurry Shire Council, 1983
A report on the 1910 fire in The North Queensland Register describes the devastation in the following terms:
"A strong wind was blowing at the time ... the fire originated on the south side of the main street and soon spread up and down the street ... then the flames crossed to the other side and demolished all the shops there ... the scene beggars description as all the places were demolished in an hour ... it is practically ruination to Cloncurry ... so terrific was the heat that Ramsay Street became a fiery tunnel, and no one could cross it in the worst area and live."
The North Queensland Register, 14/2/1910
